Plan a visit to the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary nearby Hickory Corners, Michigan! It’s a fantastic spot to see animals all year round. We loved visiting during a sunny, winter day to see all the ducks, swans, and other waterfowl hanging out.

And while we visited fully expecting to see these feathered friends, we loved learning about the birds of prey and game birds that are permanent residents here too! These birds were given to the sanctuary by wildlife rehabilitators certified by the Michigan DNR and include bald eagles, four types of owls, a red tailed hawk, quail, and several types of pheasants.

History of the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary

In 1927, WK Kellogg purchased the land around Evergreen Lake to create the bird sanctuary. At the time he purchased the land, it was poorly managed farmland. Then, a year later, he deeded the property to MSU to oversee its use as a vital sanctuary to help study and reestablish populations of Canada geese and trumpeter swans.

Kellogg Bird Sanctuary Rules

There are only a few rules to follow during a visit. One, no dogs are allowed, and also, don’t carry food to feed the birds. Bikes and drones are also not welcome here. However if you are a photographer or are interested in practicing your skills, professional photography equipment is allowed. And picnics are also welcome so long as you pick up after yourself. There are several benches all over the property.

Hours and Trail Info

There are three different trails at the sanctuary- the Paved Path is .75 miles and is accessible, the Lake Loop is 1.4 miles, and Blue Bird Trail is 1 mile.

Finally, the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary is open Wednesday to Sunday from 9-5 on weekdays and 10-3pm on weekends. It’s $6 to enter for adults, $5 for seniors, $4 for kids age 2-17.

Planning a visit to the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary is a great add if you’re visiting Kalamazoo during a day trip or getaway. In total we spent about two hours here – and we visited on the weekend when the visitors center wasn’t open.
