The Great Lakes Bay region of Michigan is located on Michigan’s east coast right around where the ‘thumb’ starts to jut out. Within this area, there are six unique towns to explore – Bay City, Birch Run, Chesaning, Frankenmuth, Midland, and Saginaw. During a weekend fall getaway, my family explored three of these towns – Bay City, Midland, and Saginaw, which are all close to each other. We were blown away by the stunning architecture, natural beauty, and number of hidden gems. Learn more in this family friendly guide to Michigan’s Great Lakes Bay.

Michigan's Best Family Friendly Hotel: The Bavarian Inn Lodge

Getaway to the Bavarian Inn in Frankenmuth

For my birthday, my family and I enjoyed a getaway to the Bavarian Inn in Frankenmuth. The last time I visited Frankenmuth was in high school when my family and I hosted a German exchange student.

Frankenmuth’s name is a nod to the province of Franconia in southern Germany where many of the people who settled here were from. Its original settlers immigrated from Franconia in the Kingdom of Bavaria in the 1840’s.

Family Friendly Fall Getaway to Mackinac Island

Fall is one of the best times of the year in Michigan. It is a time for trips to one or more of our state’s amazing apple orchards, pumpkin patches, or participating in a town’s fall or harvest festival. The weather is usually mild. And it’s a great time to go on fall color tours! One place in Michigan I’ve been yearning to visit during fall is Mackinac Island.

There are many great reason’s to visit Mackinac Island during fall – less crowds, great weather for biking, and seeing the fall colors around the island all immediately come to mind.

In this article, I provide a little history about Mackinac Island and the hotel we stayed at, details into our stay at Harbour View Inn, our trip itinerary, and other suggestions of what to explore while on the island.
