My family and I have explored Michigan extensively, from glamping near Boyne City to scenic drives along the Tunnel of Trees. Every time we passed through Harbor Springs and Petoskey, we promised ourselves we’d slow down and experience the area properly. This summer, we finally did—and it exceeded every expectation.

This trip wasn’t just your typical “Up North” weekend. We uncovered hidden gems, scenic preserves, hands-on history, and food stops that are worth planning a detour for. Below, I’ll share our four-day itinerary along with tips and insights to help you plan your own unforgettable Northern Michigan adventure.

The Best Things to Do All Year in Charlevoix

Charlevoix in northwest Michigan’s lower peninsula, is a beautiful place to visit any time of year. In the summer, it is a popular destination to enjoy its state parks, inland lakes, Lake Michigan beaches, boutiques, and charming attractions. However, Charlevoix and many of its top attractions are open year round. In fact, the best time to visit may just be after the peak summer crowds disperse. My family and I spent a weekend getaway where we explored the best things to do in any season in Charlevoix.

There’s a little something for everyone in Charlevoix. If you love architecture and history, stay in or tour the Earl Young mushroom houses and explore Castle Farms. For nature and scenery lovers, visit Mt McSauba and Fisherman’s Island State Park. Finally, for the art and foodie appreciators, almost all of Charlevoix’s restaurants remain open throughout the year! Now let’s dive into the best things to do in any season in Charlevoix. Getaway to Manitou Beach

Right before the Halloween weekend, we went on a getaway to Manitou Beach on Devils Lake! Why Devil’s Lake? Well… doesn’t it sound spooky? So it certainly is a great place to travel before Halloween. Also, this area is a great place to visit no matter the season! The village of Manitou Beach is transforming itself into a four seasons destination with shops, restaurants, and events open all year round.
A getaway to Manitou Beach and stay at this Airbnb is perfect if you’re looking for a year round vacation spot in Michigan. While we traveled as a family, during our stay I kept thinking this would be an amazing place to stay when on a girls trip or romantic getaway. Given it’s on Devils Lake with quite an interesting history, it’d also be fun to stay on a ‘spooky’ themed trip.
